Rhodesia 1896 to Bugler J W Hardy Belingwe Staff Colm A very scarce medal. This example has, at an early time, been brooch mounted on the obverse and shows signs of the mountings in the legends and on the upper rim at 2'o'clock.  The naming is 100% unaffected and complete in the normal engraved block capital style. It looks like the family had this done and then returned the medal to its original suspended state as the suspender is clearly the original item.  Only 10 medals awarded to this unit this the only bugler. On original ribbon. (VF) Copy of medal roll £495.

RN LSGC (Vic) 2nd Type to John Thomas Pte No 1382 Plymouth RMLI Service paperwork enlisted 1876 served 21years. NEF. £220.

RN LSGC (Vic) 2nd Type to John J. Thomas, Gunners Mate HMS IMPLACEABLE, the late French 74 gun Dugay Trouin, built at Rochefort France in 1800. She was engaged with the combined French and Spanish Fleet at the battle of Trafalgar but managed to evade capture during that epic battle on 21 Oct. 1805. Her stay in French hands was short lived, for on 3 Nov. 1805 a British Squadron engaged her in the Bay of Biscay, during the following engagement her masts were shot away and she was eventually captured and taken as a prize after what was described as a gallant French defence. Taken into the Royal Navy, renamed Implacable she saw action in the Baltic in 1808-0 and during off the Syrian coast in 1840. She became a training ship for boy seaman at Devonport in 1855, finally placed on the disposal list in 1908. She was handed over to Geoffrey Wheatley Cobb for preservation in 1912 and with public appeal sufficient money was raised to carry out a serious series of urgent repairs at Plymouth in the 1920’s. In 1932 as a restored ship she was towed to Portsmouth as a refurbished training establishment. During the early stages of World War Two the Admiralty requisitioned her but found her upkeep too great and in 1947 she was once again decided to dispose of her. The move caused a public outcry but, despite an appeal to save her, she was scuttled in 1949, Her figurehead and stern carvings were saved and preserved, all 160 pieces of it and presented to the Naval Museum in 1950. Importantly these very objects date from her refit in 1805 and is a representation of the gorgon Medusa unable to be displayed they were placed in store and only came out following the redeveloped Neptune Court in 1999 when both stern and figurehead of HMS Implacable were brought together and can now be viewed after 50 years in time for the Trafalgar 200th anniversary.  With full details and two copied photographs of her figure head, one when still attached to the ship. Even as a young boy travelling to the Isle of White I can clearly recall seeing her rotting hulk from the weather deck of the paddle steamer P.S. Ryde. Deep silver toned, close E.F. A stunning history of one ship that fought against us at the battle of Trafalgar 21 Oct. 1805, now close to her former enemy HMS Victory. £350
